Report on Deaf International Basketball Federation (DIBF)
Coaches clinic/development seminar in Lagos, Nigeria 21 - 23 November
2003.
Organisations involved
In co-operation with the Confederation of African Deaf Sports,
the Nigerian Deaf Sports Federation and with economical contribution
from the FIBA, the Deaf International Basketball Federation, in
Lagos, Nigeria 21 - 23 November 2003 arranged its first deaf basketball
coaches clinic/ development seminar ever in Africa. Conductors
of the clinic/seminar were the DIBF Vice President Lyndon Borrow
and myself, the DIBF Secretary General Kjell Gunnå. This
was the third time a clinic/seminar was arranged with support
by the FIBA. The first one was arranged in Beijing, China, in
December 2002 within the frames of Comité International
des Sports des Sourds (CISS), the second in Buenos Aires, Argentina
in September 2003, arranged by DIBF.
Mr John S. Yusuf, Secretary General of Confederation of African
Deaf Sports, helped me to plan and make contacts with necessary
people in advance for booking lodging and gym for the clinic/seminar.
In order to save money both Lyndon Borrow and I were accommodated
in the home of John S. Yusuf and his lovely family. Mr Kalai Suleiman
and Mr Agbabiaka Lukman, President and Secretary General respectively
of the Nigerian Deaf Sports Federation were very helpful in arranging
the clinic/seminar. I am very grateful for their positive and
creative help. I also want to forward my gratitude to the clinic/seminar
participant Mr Issa Ahmed, Nigeria, for his great and invaluable
contribution to the successful outcome of the clinic/seminar.
Issa Ahmed took care of many minor questions that arose during
the course of the clinic/seminar. Due to economic restrictions
only participants from Nigeria and Ghana were invited. Of great
interest was that Ghana as the first nation ever in Africa had
made entry to the Deaflympic Basketball tournament in Melbourne,
Australia in January 2005. In future we plan to organise further
clinics/seminars in Northern and South-Eastern Africa.
Location and participants
The clinic/seminar took place at the National Institute for Sports
- Lagos where also all participants were accommodated. It attracted
14 people:
From Nigeria:
Ms Ogundipe Monsurat, Ms Sadiq Adenike, Mr Malgvi Lawal, Mr Babatunde
Rafiu, Mr Agbabiaka Lukman, Mr Oneysolu Obiajulu, Mr Ibrahim Amuda,
Mr Issa Ahmed, Mr Kalai Suleiman and Mr Ajose Muritala.
From Ghana:
Ms Gloria Oppung, Mr Johathan Amua, Mr George Tagoe and Mr Duke
Tagoe.
The clinic/seminar was conducted quite in accordance with the
attached program. To the DIBF Central Board and Mr Jan Berteling
of the FIBA is also an account of expenses for the seminar/clinic
attached.
Accommodation
The accommodation was very good and fully met with the requirements
of the participants.
FIBA Sponsor
The FIBA, through Jan Berteling, President of the FIBA Council
for Basketball for People with a Dysfunction, sponsored this clinic/seminar
by contribution with 75% of the travel-expenses for the participants
and with 100% for the accommodation and other local expenses.
I would like to forward my deepest gratitude to Jan Berteling
and the FIBA for their contribution to the successful outcome
of the seminar/clinic. Without this economical contribution I
really doubt that this clinic/seminar would ever have been carried
through at all.
Aims and goals with clinic/seminar
The aims and goals with the seminar/clinic were in the first hand
to offer deaf basketball coaches and leaders fundamental knowledge
of how lead a basketball group, make up plans for training and
practice, to develop deaf basketball in their home-countries and
to give them self-confidence to approach hearing basketball associations
to seek co-operation and guidance for their continued development.
Training - lectures
There were training sessions everyday during the clinic/seminar
between 10.00 - 12.00 hrs led by Lyndon Borrow and myself. A young
basketball team consisting of about 15 deaf boys and girls from
a deaf school helped us show the clinic/seminar participants how
to plan, construct and carry through programs for training sessions.
Unfortunately due to renovating of the indoor basketball court
we had to perform the training sessions outdoor on a concrete
basketball floor, right under the sun in 45-50C degree with humidity.
I was really sweating and draining
Between 13.00 - about 18.00 hrs everyday there were theoretical
sessions indoor led by Lyndon Borrow and myself. Lyndon Borrow
took care of introduction and information about the DIBF and its
program. The lecture room was equipped with facilities enough
to ensure a good review of the seminar content and smooth discussions.
Thanks heaven a big fan was functioning
Conclusion
The clinic/seminar was an extremely great success which completely
met with the aims and goals of the clinic/seminar expressed above.
The participants excelled in profound and engaged discussions
showing much enthusiasm and willingness to learn from the lessons.
Especially good discussions were about the DIBF and its work,
relationships to hearing basketball organisations and different
leadership roles, especially women and men leadership. I am sure
in future we will see the many of these participants in leading
roles of deaf basketball in their home-countries and with fully
developed contacts with the hearing basketball organisations of
their home-countries.
Unfortunately this occasion, much to our regret, there was not
much time for us conductors to socialise and meet with the participants
during the evenings. It was a very long distance from the Sports
Institute to the home of John S. Yusuf and we had to leave early.
We sincerely hope to be able in future to come back to Nigeria
to better learn to know the participants.
I would like to forward Mr. Lyndon Borrow and my own deeply
felt gratitude to Mr. John S. Yusuf for his and his family wide
and open hospitality in their nice house in Lagos. We really enjoyed
our stay and we also learned a lot about the conditions in which
deaf people in Nigeria live.
