The Deaflympics commenced yesterday in Melbourne, Australia until January 16, 2005. The opening ceremony was held in the Melbourne Olympic Park. The Deaflympics Basketball Tournament for Men and Women starts today.

The basketball competition will be played according to the rules and regulations of FIBA and the Deaflympics.

The following countries will participate in the men's tournament: Australia, China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, Russia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and USA.

For the women's tournament, the following teams will be competing: Australia, China, Greece, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, Sweden, Ukraine and USA.

Mission Statement
"Melbourne 2005 20th Deaflympic Games will stage a world class sporting and social event for Deaf and Hard of Hearing athletes and friends from around the world.

In organising this event, the organising committee and their partner, Deaf Sports Australia, will raise awareness of deaf related issues throughout the wider community and strive to ensure that a legacy program for future Deaflympians is achieved."

The Deaflympics are played every four years, the 2009 Deaflympics will be hosted by Chinese Taipei.
