Australian basketball has had success in both the men’s and women’s competition on Wednesday, with the men finishing the preliminary rounds in fourth position and progressing to the semi finals and the women winning their consolation final and progressing to the playoff off for fifth position.

The men will play the US in the second semi final on Fri at 9pm at Melbourne’s Sports and Aquatic Centre. The US finished in second position and the winner will progress straight to the gold medal match with the loser playing off for bronze.

Slovenia play Lithuania in the other men’s semi final on Friday night.

The Australian women defeated rivals and neighbours New Zealand in their consolation final on Wednesday in a close match, 53-50.

They now play Greece in for fifth position on Friday at 3pm.

Prudence Harpham was Australia’s top scorer with 18 points and ten rebounds. Lisa Westwood had 12 points and Irena Farinacci ten points.

Claudia Arjun was best for New Zealand with 20 points.

In the women’s competition Sweden will play the US in the gold medal match at 3pm on Saturday.

Lithuania takes on the Ukraine for bronze.
